Old East Main Street

RAIN DATE Sunday, May 17, 2020

Until the early 20th century, the area between Church and Broad streets was mostly farmed or undeveloped. Present-day Broad Street was the town’s eastern boundary.

As Middletown grew, Church Street became the dividing line between West and East Main Street. Despite the development of this land into a residential area in the 1900s, a few houses from the mid- to late 1800s remain.

You can identify these earlier houses, like the ones at 11 East Main and 100 East Main, by their closeness to the street and foundations conforming to the hilly topography.

More formal Victorian and Colonial Revival styled homes were developed here from 1900–1930. Trained docents will be stationed along the route so you can look, listen, and learn at your own pace.

Have your camera ready as Christ Reformed UCC will graciously grant tour patrons the rare opportunity to ascend the steeple where you will be mesmerized by the spectacular view of Middletown Valley. Make it a day, come early for breakfast or stay after for lunch and enjoy all our historic town has to offer.

Tour begins at the historic Christ Reformed UCC located at 12 South Church Street, Middletown, Maryland, 21769. Tickets may be purchased online or at Christ Reformed Church the day of the event. Tickets are $10 per person. Children under 16 are free.

Proceeds will benefit Main Street Middletown’s efforts to restore two other downtown historic buildings. To learn more about this restoration project already underway please visit Restoration of Bussard’s Barbershop
